Many cultures depend on being connected to their environment on an elemental and spiritual level. With the technology boom I wonder if this is something that folks are lacking or are still quit aware of. Grey areas need comments.

Great question.
I can only speak from experience, which is growing up and living in a moderately urbanized environment with access both to large areas of nature and a major city. Usually, I feel most connected when I'm out (alone) in nature. All the stifling encumbrances of the machinery of human society dissolve, and my perspective shifts and broadens just enough to render time, place, and ego immaterial. The dissolution of the ego greatly facilitates connection with the natural environment, and it becomes a spiritual connection.
The further away from nature and the closer to civilization I get, the more alienated, agitated, narrow-minded, and disconnected I feel.
