DEATH: IS IT POSSIBLE YOU CHOSE YOUR OWN AFTERLIFE?

yes or no : philosophy :

Since the dawn of awareness humanity has contemplated what happens after death. But here's a thought. What if everyone is right. What if you create your own afterlife. So, for instance, there are vikings right now enjoying valhalla. Or egyprian kings lording it up over slaves in their reincarnation as gods.

Does that also mean that pretty much all christians are going to a self created hell? I mean let's face it they don't stick to their own rules much do they.

It may also explain all the flies. Naughty buddhists.

Not good if your an atheist either really. You condemn yourself to non existance.

For myself I believe in the universal spirit so I would be eternal. go me :-)

If Christians can choose their own afterlife, why would they choose a self created hell? Because they break the rules? Have you ever tried to follow some of those rules?
by RunsWithScissors on Wed Sep 16, 09 2:41am [+]

What i'm saying is christians create the choice and then the rules. so you create the option of hell within your own afterlife theory. Your guilt may condemn you to hell. certainly more likely if your a cathoolic.

Why would I follow the rules of christianity? They dont make much sense to me.

ok dont kill and dont steal. but the rest of the ten commandments are a bit dumb.

"so you create the option of hell within your own afterlife theory"

Okay, I can buy that. That's why there are rules to follow, which are basically the same as any moral or man-made rules and laws. Guidelines on how to live your life and how to be a good person. If you can't follow the rules, your chances of going to Heaven become slimmer. So yes, it is possible to choose your own afterlife. It's up to you to decide which afterlife you desire, which will be decided depending on how you've lived your life.
by RunsWithScissors on Wed Sep 16, 09 2:55am [+]

Ah but in my little theory you decide your own. No St Peter at the pearly gates. Well there will be but for you but ultimately you will be the one who decides what his decision is based on your own judgement about yourself.

^But isn't being your own judge a bit biased? The self-rightous will decide that they belong in Heaven, despite the fact that their vanity is a sin in itself. Who are we to judge ourselves?
by RunsWithScissors on Wed Sep 16, 09 3:33am [+]

^oops.. meant to say self-righteous

It's actually something that's been proposed by a few physicists and physiologists.

"But isn't being your own judge a bit biased? The self-rightous will decide that they belong in Heaven, despite the fact that their vanity is a sin in itself. Who are we to judge ourselves?"

Think about it this way. if all the self righteous people go to heaven then it's not going to be a nice place to be is it?

Our subconscious will judge us far better than we can Runswith. Your still using the god metaphore in answering this. this is about shifting your perception away from god even if it's just for the time you spend thinking on this ballot.

Surely it can't be a sin to have an open mind?

I think yung tinkered with the idea a bit GP and certainly hinduism has it's own take on variations of heavenly rewards.

That and terry pratchett (author of discworld) explores the theme a lot.

Not to mention the maoris idea that we are the fream of ourselves.

It is also a fairly strong element of being on LSD.

I never said it was a new idea :-)

I don't get the reference to "all the flies"...
by LCD on Wed Sep 16, 09 1:59pm [+]

well in buddhism you reincarnate depending on how you behaved in your past incarnation. I often wondered why so many came back as flies. That's why buddhism didn't work for me. That and animals can't be held accountable for their moral disposition because they dont have one.

But maybe flies want to be humans and have little fly churches to humanity.

or maybe not... :-)
by quirk99 on Wed Sep 16, 09 3:35pm [+]

Well some Christians believe that hell is being cut off from God. Good question though. Might be kind of nice if you created your own after life.
by Greatdane on Wed Sep 16, 09 5:54pm [+]

True, quirk. It's not really a new concept to the field of science. Though it is one that's kept under wraps for the obvious reasons. There have been doctors who've been called crazy for even remotely suggesting such. To many, it's too close to the field of "new age hogwash" for them to touch.

It was Max Planck who said something along the lines of (and I'm paraphrasing): 'To completely understand physics, we have to delve into the area of metaphysics'. He went on to win the Nobel Prize and is considered to be the founder of the field of Quantum Mechanics. He also had no problem with the possibility that even his own theories on physics could eventually be proven wrong. He understood that as a relatively young species on earth, we really have a very infantile understanding on what logic and current scientific truths are.

Maybe you can also decide if water is wet. What is is.
