HOW LONG DOES IT REALLY TAKE TO GET RESULTS FROM A DNA SPECIMEN?

COMMENTS:
I don't think the analyses take particularly long, but it would depend on the backlog of entries the company had to deal with before getting to yours. And as usual, I'm sure a fistful of $ can fast-track things.
Depends. If you are the C.I.A waiting for results on bin Laden maybe 2 hours. If you are Maury Povich waiting for your white trash guest's paternity test then you'll be waiting weeks.
Voted : Depends on the type of test
The source of the DNA is irrelavent. There's two types of tests. Mitochondrial DNA is less specific then VNTR (Variable Number Tandom Repeats). VNTR is accurate to 1 in 100 million where as Mitochondrial only looks at the maternal side of DNA. The average test only takes a matter of hours but due to a lengthy back log and case urgency, labs schedule DNA analysis by priority, with Law Enforment investigations first, followed by Court Ordered analysis and then private sector requests. Average wait time = 3 weeks.
^ VNTR actually takes longer to preform since it involves multiple staged testing to preform, though either type can be completed in less than a day.
