WHY DOES THE MEDIA ONLY FOCUS ON PRETTY WHITE WOMEN AND GIRLS WHO GO MISSING?

crime :
[+] serious ballot by RunsWithScissors

I'm watching the TV show "The View" and noticed that they're featuring missing black women and girls, because the media doesn't pay any attention when they come up missing. The media only focuses on pretty white women and girls.

Why is that?

The media just doesn't care
The general public cares, but the media doesn't
I blame both the media and the public
because eveyone likes pretty white girls
Good question!
No stories about missing MEN either

I remember when Laci Peterson was missing a young pregnant black woman in Chicago was also missing.
Her family asked the question, "why so much coverage for Laci but none for their daughter."

I think the media does what is best for their ratings, missing black girl might not sell as many newspapers, magazines etc as a missing white girl in suburban America. So although I do blame the media I blame the public as well.

How can you blame the public if they're not informed that someone is missing?

^^ the media knows what people are interested in, sample polls, target audience and such. That's how they make money on advertisment.

Not saying everyone is more interested in the missing of pretty white girls, you for example seem to want to hear about black girls missing too, or you wouldn't have made this ballot, but many who buy products advertised are.

This was talked about on The View and other talk shows during the Laci Peterson and the Natalee Holloway disappearances, I remember specifically the reasons given. They were the "all american family, could have been your daughter or mine."

I've been watching BBC and they are talking about and showing graphic images of children being killed in Syria, it's heartbreaking, but I don't see that same coverage on American networks, at least not in such detail, why is that? Because I don't think majority of Americans are interested in seeing Muslim children dying , they would rather hear and talk about the death of Whitney Houston or who the Hollywood Stars are wearing.

Again I'm not saying every American feels this way, but networks make money by showing what the majority want to see, and apparently the majority wants to see crap.

If enough people tuned out when coverage of a white womans gone missing or the 5 day coverage of a celebrity dying, you would see the media changing what news stories they cover.

As I said, I blame the media for choosing stories on ratings, but those who create the ratings are the public.

Sorry I rambled a bit up there and for the grammar, I'm in a hurry.

Voted : Good question!
And, liberal media that it is!
Because white men like to fantasize about rescuing them and making them their eternally grateful and placating concubines.
Because most minorities drop out of high school and can't read the news stories about missing women.
Hey you think the media is biased about missing Minorities. THINK when was the last time you saw or heard a news story about a MISSING MAN! The media is also terribly SEXIST!
Voted : Demographics
63% (2/3) of the US population is caucasian so it targets the interest of the largest percent of the population; The cases are usually high profile "Who-Done-Its" involving middle class (American Dream) types, with a known likely suspect. The media spins on it like a daily soap opera generating ratings and network profits. But really it's the investigating agency that is the motivator with the depth of information released to the news for coverage.

In reality, not even 1% of missing persons cases make the news. The National Institute of Justice reports that on any given day, there are as many as 100,000 active missing persons cases in the United States and every year, tens of thousands of people vanish under suspicious circumstances.
