"PRETWEEN" -- HAVE WE GONE TOO FAR IN LABELING AND GROUPING KIDS?

I was reading some story in the Chicago Tribune, and I was reading some column about Hilary Duff and her impact on today's kids, and the author referred to her 7-year-old kid as a "pretween". I can understand the term "teen", as well as even "preteen" or "tween" -- but "pretween"?! Is that really necessary? At what point can we just call a kid a kid, y'know?

Yes we've gone too far -- just call them "kids"
No -- "pretween" is accurate.
